Toilet flush valve replacement

Difficulty: Easy · Time: 20–30 min · No plumber needed

1

Gather your tools

You'll need: adjustable wrench, sponge, bucket, replacement flapper kit (check your toilet model). Turn off the water supply valve behind the toilet — clockwise until it stops.

Tip: Take a photo of the inside of your tank before disassembling — it's your reference.
2

Drain & remove the old flapper

Flush to empty the tank. Use the sponge to remove remaining water. Unhook the rubber flapper from both pegs on the overflow tube, then disconnect the chain from the flush handle arm.

Tip: If the flapper is stuck, wiggle gently — old rubber hardens over time.
3

Inspect the flush valve seat

Run your finger around the valve seat (the hole the flapper sits on). If you feel mineral buildup or pitting, clean it with white vinegar on a cloth. Rough edges prevent a watertight seal.

Tip: A rough seat is the #1 reason new flappers still run. Don't skip this.
4

Install the new flapper

Snap the new flapper onto the overflow tube pegs. The tabs should click firmly into place. Connect the chain to the flush arm — leave 1/2 inch of slack. Too tight = leaks. Too loose = poor flush.

Tip: Test the chain length by pressing the flush handle. The flapper should lift fully then drop cleanly.
5

Restore water & test

Turn the supply valve counterclockwise to restore water. Wait 60 seconds for the tank to fill. Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank — if color appears in the bowl without flushing, the flapper needs adjustment.

Tip: Still running? Flush 3 times, check the chain isn't caught under the flapper.
